SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES AT SOILAND MATERIALS
Supporting the Circular Economy Since 1962
Sustainability has been part of how we operate for more than 60 years. As a family-owned and locally operated company, we focus on practical steps that protect our resources and serve Sonoma County and the North Bay. Our efforts are centered on reducing landfill use, conserving raw materials, lowering emissions, and keeping valuable materials in productive use within our local community.
Recycling & the Circular Economy
Recycling is a core part of our daily operations. Each year, we recycle more than 100,000 tons of debris, helping reduce pressure on local landfills while keeping resources in our county that create useful products for construction and landscaping.
At our quarry and soils facilities, we accept concrete, ceramic, brick, and asphalt from homeowners and contractors. These materials are separated, screened, and processed into recycled aggregate base that meets city, county, and state specifications. This process reduces the need for new mining and provides dependable materials for roads, driveways, and infrastructure projects.
At our Green Recycling Center, we receive green debris such as branches, wood, brush, and yard trimmings. We grind, screen, and compost these materials into products like Clean Green Compost and Organic Arbor Mulch. These products improve soil structure, support plant health, and return nutrients to the land.
By processing materials locally and returning them to local projects, we help close the loop within our own community.
Solar Energy & Emissions Reduction
We began investing in solar power in 2007 and have expanded our system to power more than 50% of our operations with renewable energy. Our 240 kW dual-axis solar tracking system follows the sun throughout the day to maximize energy production.
Each year, the system generates more than 400,000 kilowatt-hours of renewable energy. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions and lowers our reliance on nonrenewable energy sources while helping us operate efficiently.
Water Stewardship & Stormwater Management
Water conservation is essential in California. At all of our sites, we capture and recycle groundwater and stormwater for dust control and plant operations. At our composting facilities, we reuse retention pond water during production to reduce reliance on municipal water supplies.
We also produce Low Impact Development (LID) materials that support stormwater management, including BASMAA-certified bioswale mixes and structural soils designed to improve drainage and root health. Through retention ponds, bioswales, and infiltration systems, we help slow and filter runoff while supporting groundwater recharge.
Quality, Testing & Quarry Reclamation
Sustainable operations also depend on consistent quality. We source inputs locally whenever possible, develop science-based formulas, and conduct more than 250 lab analyses each year to ensure safety and performance. Every material we produce goes through the same rigorous testing process.
At Stony Point Rock Quarry, we have long-term reclamation plans in place to restore the land once mining is complete. The site will include wetlands, riparian habitat, and native vegetation designed to support wildlife and exceed county standards.
